Sharpsburg Stallions Parade

The Sharpsburg Parade will be held in downtown Sharpsburg on Saturday, August 11. The parade starts at 9:00 am.

ew Officials-2012

Derrick McElwanney was sworn in as Town Council Member at the December 9th meeting.  Mr. McElwanney, former Mayor, resigned  two years into his 4-year term as Mayor.

Current Mayor Wendell Staley was sworn in for a 4-year term on this date.   Formally,  Mayor Staley was elected to complete a  2-year term vacated by Derrick McElwaney when he resigned.
Celine Davenport was elected Mayor-pro tem.  Ms. Davenport had completed the 2-year term and is now  elected for 4-year term.

Newly elected Keith Rhodes has been absent from a majority of the meetings since his re-election...as in the previous year.  Gordy Anderson, who is up for re-election next year is also habitually absent from meetings.

Called meeting of Town Council

There will be a called meeting of the Sharpsburg Town Council on August 20, 2012, to set the mileage rate for the coming year.

Old Town Area be aware!

The merchants in the Old Town area have been victims of vandalism and theft.  Signs warning to trespassers that they will prosecuted if caught on the sites of posted areas.

Items have been stolen from several merchants as well as the small park beside the Town Library.  Damage was also done to the trellis at the entrance to the park.

Vulgar language has been written the building and benches on one site as well as broken windows, visible signs of trespassing on another site, plants (in ground) dug-up at the and removed from the Town Library and the Town Hall brick wall has also sustained damage.

One residence was also victimized.

The response of the Mayor when these events were reported was, "Call the police."  According to the Mayor these were not of sufficient significance for the Town to be concerned.

There is some discussion of the forming of a Neighborhood Watch but effectiveness questioned because the trespassing and thefts occur at night when the Town is pretty much deserted.
Neighborhood Watch
Council Member Celine Davenport has suggested the Town of Sharpsburg inquire about implementing Neighborhood watches. She is concerned about school buses and students crossing highways in the morning and afternoon. She also suggest that the neighborhood watches may deter vandalism or criminal activity.
Councilwoman Davenport is getting very little support from the Mayor or other Councilmen. Councilwoman Davenport has volunteers ready to proceed but to date no further action has been taken.

Still Missing.......
One of the Town Councilmen is still not present at the Town Council meetings. He has missed an enourmous number of meetings as well as being available for any other Town business.

New Building Codes in Effect

In order to get a Business License in the Town of Sharpsburg for the year 2012, the building being occupied must meet current building codes.  The Ordinance will be posted on this website on the Ordinance & Charter page.

I have stopped trying to post dates of the Town Council meetings because the meetings are cancelled/rescheduled so often it is impossible to keep up with dates! The April meeting was cancelled without notice or posting as is required by Georgia law.
